What it Costs to Glide
Gliding is one of the lowest-cost forms of aviation. Once you have joined the Club and reached solo standard in a club single-seater, then a 2.5-hour flight can be as cheap as $100. This is based on $55 for a 2000′ tow and $18/hour for one of the Club’s Astirs. To make longer flights more affordable, if you stay up longer than 2.5 hours, there is no additional glider hire charge!
Membership Costs (Normal Rates)
To fly legally in Australia (and to have insurance cover for third-party liability), all pilots must become members of the Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) and a local gliding club.
When you first join, you become a Probationary Member for the first three months. This is $478 ($260 for Club Membership and $218 for GFA membership).
After that, you can be invited to join the club, which costs $910/year ($490 for Club Membership and $420 for GFA membership).
Note: Annual Renew is May 1 each year, so the above rates may be prorated to end on the renewal date. These prices were current at the time of publication (May 2024) but may have varied since. Please check with the club for current rates.
Membership Costs (Student/Junior Rates)
If you are an Australian Resident and full-time student or under 26 years old, the Club and GFA offer these discounted rates:
Probationary Membership for the first 3 months $333 ($115 for Club Membership and $218 for GFA membership).
After the probationary period, Full Membership is $478/year.
Note: Annual Renew is May 1 each year, so the above rates may be prorated to end on the renewal date. These prices were current at the time of publication (May 2024) but may have varied since. Please check with the club for current rates.
